Charles, 56, is a seasoned solo and short-handed competitor with his Sigma 36 ‘British Beagle’.  He lives in Teddington, but spends as much time as possible in his house in Portscatho, near the Falmouth Estuary in Cornwall, where he was brought up dinghy sailing as a child and has pursued his passion for sailing ever since, racing ‘Kali’ his Ajax 23 keel boat out of St Mawes Sailing Club, as well as coastal, offshore and ocean racing in ‘British Beagle’.

Since acquiring ‘British Beagle’ in 2009, he has raced extensively with SORC (Solo Offshore Racing Club) with many class wins in both coastal and offshore series and won the IRC overall Trophy for the 2012 offshore series. He has also competed regularly 2-handed, with RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) finishing 2nd in IRC overall 2-handed in the 2011 Fastnet. He was one of the few boats to finish the inaugural soloFastnet race in 2016 and is now excited about the prospect competing again this year. In 2013, he successfully completed the OSTAR, finishing 2nd in class.

During the summer the boat is based in St Mawes and raced fully crewed in many local regattas as well as Falmouth week. ‘British Beagle’ won the top IRC class in 2012 & 2014, was awarded ‘Top Yacht’ in Falmouth Week 2014 as well as finishing 2nd in the SW IRC Championships in both 2014 & 2015.
